Behind the Walls Talk

A blog giving insight to the hearts and minds of those behind the prison walls.

Bertie Correctional

Behind the Walls Talk,

Here at Bertie Correctional Institution, we went on code one on June 28th of 2024 and it was lifted on July 12th of 2024. During that period, they had us living in the most inhumane conditions that one should never have to experience. The last shower that any individual had was on the 27th of June. Nobody was allowed to take showers until July 2nd, which is well over the 72-hour time. During the 14-day period we were never allowed to clean the block or sales. When we did get showers (3) during the code one we repeatedly showered in the same filth because if you even attempted to clean the cell or showers, they will lock you down. Trash was piled and thrown anywhere in the block. Finally, to at least remove the trash out of the block we had to force the janitor that worked the hall to get it out of here. We never got a chance to exchange clothes for eight days with only six days’ worth of clothes. The last shower we took in that rotation was in cold water. Outside of the code one close custody does not get regular haircuts. We had one haircut on blue unit in two months. We have not had outside recreation in over a year. Close custody does not have access to educational programs or religious services. So many of us have chronic blood pressure issues, or chronic health problems alone and never get the proper exercise. With the conditions being at the current state many of us are experiencing manic depression. Every time you get used to one thing is snatched away from you. We ask that everyone continue to pray for us here because these are trying times. Thank you for everything you do for us Behind the Walls Talk.
